How to Calculate Deck Boards

Enter your deck length and width, then provide the width, spacing and length of your decking boards. The calculator estimates the number of boards required and adds your selected waste allowance.

Deck Area Length × Width
Board Coverage Board Width + Board Gap
Boards Required Required Boards + Waste Allowance

Decking Waste Allowance

A waste allowance helps account for cutting, trimming, damaged boards and installation mistakes.

💡 Tip: Ordering a little extra concrete can help account for uneven ground, measurement differences and material loss.

How to Calculate Concrete

To calculate the amount of concrete required for a rectangular slab, multiply the length by the width and the concrete thickness. Convert the result into cubic feet or cubic yards depending on your project requirements.

Concrete Volume Length × Width × Depth
Cubic Yards Cubic Feet ÷ 27
Waste Concrete Volume × Waste %

Recommended Waste Allowance

Adding a waste allowance can help compensate for uneven surfaces, cutting, spillage and minor measurement errors.

Concrete Calculator FAQ

How much concrete do I need for a 10 × 10 slab?

The amount depends on the slab thickness. For example, a 10 × 10 foot slab that is 4 inches thick requires approximately 1.23 cubic yards of concrete before adding waste.

How much extra concrete should I order?

A 5% to 10% allowance is commonly used for straightforward projects. More may be appropriate when the site has uneven ground or a complex shape.

Should I use bags or ready-mix concrete?

Small projects can often be handled using concrete bags, while larger slabs and foundations may be more practical with ready-mix concrete delivered by a concrete supplier.
